Why Visit Mid Wales This Autumn?

Wales is one of the most enchanting places to visit during the autumn months. Rolling hills and valleys are awash with rich, magical colours, as the changing of the seasons brings warm hues to trees before they lose their leaves. Morning mists adorn lakes and rivers, making them sparkle and adding a touch of autumnal mystery.

Autumn is the perfect time to settle down next to roaring fires in cosy inns, as you enjoy delicious local pub food accompanied by a glass of Merlot. There are so many walks to embark on, where you can admire jaw-dropping landscapes and feel crisp leaves crunching beneath your feet. Just make sure you wrap up warm and bring a cosy scarf with you – we all know how chilly the UK can get in the autumn months!

Those in-between months separating the height of summer and the cold frost of winter really are an idyllic time to visit Wales.

Our Top Recommendations for Places to Visit in Wales This Autumn

Located in the tranquil Welsh countryside, Lundy Lodges offers the ideal base to experience the very best of the autumnal months in Wales. You can venture on all sorts of walks right from our doorstep, absorbing the rich hues of autumn and breathing in the crisp country air. Some of our favourite nearby walks include The Begwns, Hay Bluff, and Pen Y Fan, all of which are easily accessible via a short drive. There are also acres of incredible open common land located behind the lodges, perfect for adventuring and exploring!

If you want to explore further afield, two nearby towns we would highly recommend visiting are Builth Wells and Hay-on-Wye. Lying just a 15-minute drive away from our lodges, the charming town of Hay-on-Wye boasts all sorts of wonderful sights to see and activities to get involved in during the autumn months. Dubbed “The Town of Books” due to its incredible literary links, Hay-on-Wye is much loved for its beautiful setting on the banks of the river Wye. The turning colours of the leaves make views across the river an even more spectacular sight than at other times of the year. To get the best views and colourful backdrops, we recommend embarking on the Offa’s Dyke Path.

The stunning Hay Castle will set imaginations soaring as visitors discover its thousand-year-old history. This remarkable structure is part Norman, part Jacobean and part Victorian, having been a home to invaders, patriots’ citadel, country manor and a world-famous bookshop. With plenty of indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy, it’s a great place to visit whatever the weather.

A 25-minute drive from Lundy Lodges will find you in the heart of Builth Wells, a historic market town bursting with millennia of history. The town is home to the Mid Wales Autumn Fayre, taking place on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th October 2023. The festival showcases artisan food and drink, and arts and crafts from across Wales, including tasty treats from over 40 artisan food and drink producers! Also displayed are over 100 trucks in the Truck Feast section, as well as vintage cars, motorbikes, and tractors in the Classic Vehicles display. It makes a fantastic day out for the whole family!
